一年一度的全國研究生入學考試於上週六進行。今年參加考試的考生共有140萬，比2009年增加了13%。
在上面的報道中，national post-graduate entrance examination就是“全國研究生入學考試”，也可以用postgraduate qualification exam來表示。“考研”就是take part in the national post-graduate entrance examination / postgraduate qualification exam。也有部分學生是不需要參加國家研究生入學考試就能上研的，因爲他們獲得了“保研”（postgraduate recommendation）資格。
要被錄取爲研究生，首先要通過國家研究生入學考試，這是qualifying examination / preliminary exam（初試），在過線之後才能參加secondary examination（複試），複試一般包括written examination（筆試）和oral examination（口試）或interview（面試）。在錄取之後，根據成績的高低，又分爲government-supported graduate student（公費研究生）和self-supporting graduate student（自費研究生）。部分研究生是邊工作邊學習，此類研究生即on-the-job postgraduate student（在職研究生）。
