其實，我們都知道英文的單詞通常包含有前綴、後綴和詞根三部分。前綴改變詞義，後綴改變詞性，詞根表達最基本的含義。詞根部分很多都基本是我們學過的一些基礎詞彙，所以在學習單詞時，若能掌握一定的前後綴的知識，然後結合詞根部分的基本含義，那麼背單詞將容易很多，同時許多單詞的意思也可以進行大膽猜測。
就拿unpredictability這個詞來說(1995年第五篇文章)，詞根部分是dict,和“說”有關，pre是前綴，表示“前面”，前面還有一個表示否定的前綴un, 後面的ability是一個後綴，表示“某種能力”，通常翻譯爲“可...性”，所以，綜合看來，這個單詞的意思就是“不可提前說出來的特性”，就是“不可預測性”。還比如，知道normal 是 “正常的”，ab-是否定前綴，那麼abnormal 就是“不正常的”。但是請注意，這個單詞使用的時候，如果指人的話，通常指的是“變態的”，所以要慎用。
